Math Readers

Puppies and Kittens Wag their MATH Tales/Tails!

My Puppy and Kitten Math Readers began as idea from the publisher. They wanted a series of books about early math concepts using pupppy and kittens. That's really all the initial direction I received. And, that's when I began researching everything I needed to know about elementary math curriculum, the national math standards--and fun ways to teach young readers about counting, adding, subtracting, measuring, and telling time.

Not only did I come up with telling a puppy and kitten story on the top of each page and the math story on bottom of each page, I drew book dummies (drawings of book pages) of how I wanted the books laid out.

Surprisingly, the publisher took my advice, (well, most of it anyway) and what you see is a series of books written and designed my ME. While I didn't physically layout out the final books, I worked with graphic artists who did.

One final note: Because of my suggestion to turn the book horizontal to create more space for the math concepts, the publisher has started doing this with many of their books. Tail wags for everyone!

TELLING TIME WITH PUPPIES AND KITTENS
"A part of the PUPPY AND KITTEN MATH series, this nonfiction text presents adorable photos of these animals as it explains the process of telling time, beginning with an explanation of clocks with and without faces. Telling time by the hour and half hour follows this information. Several pages are devoted to reading and writing the time on digital clocks. A section titled "Time for Puppies and Kittens" begins with puppies eating breakfast at 9:00 and follows both puppies and kittens through the day until it is time for bed at 8:00. Inserts of pictures of two clocks on most pages show how to write and say the indicated time. A "Time for Activities" page suggests keeping a log of your day and making a clock collage. Several books and web sites are listed on a "Learn More" page. A table of contents, "Words to Know" page, and a short index are included. This book with its appealing pictures and logical text should be very helpful when teaching children the skill of telling time."

SUBTRACTING PUPPIES AND KITTENS
Summary:
Illustrates challenging concepts of subtraction by counting puppies and kittens.

Critical Annotation:
Does exactly what it sets out to do--illustrate the difficult mathematical concept of subtraction for primary kids by visually showing puppies and kittens. Here are five puppies, subtract three (always adorable ones), and now there are two. Color photographs are great and kids will delightedly answer correctly because the problems are so clear and visual.

Recommendations:
Very Good. Perfect for every classroom and library collection for grades 1-3.

Math = Cute

"Fluffy and Buttons never stop eating. Their bodies are growing wide. How wide are their bodies?"

Awwwwwww.

We recently received a series of books that brought my work to a complete halt. Called "Puppy & Kitten Math", this series pairs math concepts with the most painfully adorable animals you've ever seen. Whether you're measuring the head of a tiny Chihuahua or reading a clock to find out when a baby Cocker Spaniel requires a bath, you'll be overwhelmed with a feeling of childlike glee. Oh, and your kids will love them too. They'll be on the shelves soon!
